Freewheel Control

Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 1, 2026

Freewheel is built to do one thing: let you control your smart trainer. It does that on your device, talking directly to your trainer over Bluetooth. It does not have accounts, it does not build a profile of you, and it does not send your ride data to us or to anyone else.

This policy explains what that means in practice — what stays on your device, what the app does and doesn't store, and the few places Apple handles data on your behalf.

In this policy, "we," "us," and "Freewheel" refer to Straylight Orbital LLC / Mark Strayer, the developer of the Freewheel app. "You" means the person using the app.

The short version

  • We don't collect, transmit, or store your personal information on our servers. We don't operate servers that receive your data at all.
  • Your ride data — power, cadence, speed, resistance, grade — is read live from your trainer and stays on your device. We never see it.
  • The app remembers how many free rides you've used by storing a small value in your own iCloud account. We can't read that.
  • Purchases go through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple processes payment; we never receive your card or billing details.

What Freewheel does on your device

When you pair Freewheel with a smart trainer, the app connects over Bluetooth Low Energy using the standard FTMS protocol. While you ride, the app reads live metrics from the trainer — such as power, cadence, and speed — and sends control commands back, like resistance and grade adjustments.

This exchange happens directly between your device and your trainer. The data is shown to you in real time and is not recorded to any server, account, or analytics system controlled by us. When the session ends, it isn't retained by us because we never received it.

Freewheel requests Bluetooth access for the single purpose of connecting to your trainer. It does not use Bluetooth to determine your location.

Free trial and iCloud

Freewheel offers a limited free trial. To track how many free rides you've used, the app stores a small counter using Apple's iCloud key-value storage (NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore). This keeps the trial consistent across your own Apple devices.

This value lives in your personal iCloud account, under your control. It is not transmitted to us, and we have no ability to read, access, or recover it. Apple's handling of your iCloud data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

Purchases

If you choose to unlock the full version of Freewheel, the transaction is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit. Apple processes your payment and manages your purchase record. We receive aggregate sales information from Apple, but we do not receive your name, payment card, or billing address. Apple's collection and use of that information is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

Apple Health

If you choose to let Freewheel Control save your rides to Apple Health, the app writes workout data to HealthKit on your device, with your explicit permission. You can grant or revoke this access at any time in the Health app or in iOS Settings.

Data written to or read from Apple Health stays on your device and in your iCloud (if you have Health syncing enabled). We do not receive it. In keeping with Apple's requirements, Freewheel does not use any data obtained through HealthKit for advertising, marketing, or sale to third parties, and does not share it with any third party.

Diagnostics

If you opt in through your device settings, Apple may share anonymized, aggregate crash and usage diagnostics with us to help improve the app. This information is not tied to your identity and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. You can turn this off at any time in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

What we don't do

  • We don't require an account, email address, or login.
  • We don't use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
  • We don't sell, rent, or share personal information — because we don't collect it.
  • We don't track you across other apps or websites.

Children's privacy

Freewheel is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app does not collect personal information from anyone, this poses no specific risk, but if you believe a child has provided information through the app in a way we should know about, contact us at the address below.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR (Europe) or the CCPA (California), including the right to access, correct, or delete personal information a company holds about you. Because Freewheel does not collect or store your personal information, we have nothing to retrieve, correct, or delete on our end. Data held in your own iCloud account is managed by you through Apple's tools.

If you have questions about your rights in relation to Freewheel, contact us using the details below.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Freewheel handles data, we'll update this policy and revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect in a new version of the app.
